Luis Royo is a popular artist best known for his work in fantasy and SF, particularly adept at painting naked and near naked women in futuristic and apocalyptic settings.
Royo was born in 1954, in Olalla, Spain. He studied painting and interior design at school in Zaragoza.
His interest in painting naked ladies probably began when he started reading adult comics in the late 70’s. He became a big fan of artists like Moebius and Enki Bilal.
In the 1980’s Royo started contributing covers for Heavy Metal Magazine, a popular adult SF and fantasy comic magazine, the stories feature striking artwork by various talented artists and some of the art is of the erotic variety. The magazine was first published in 1977 and still selling today.
Royo was the artist most associated with Heavy Metal Magazine, and his reputation and cult status grew because of the magazine. There were Heavy Metal Calendars featuring Royo’s artwork and galleries inside the magazine entirely devoted to Royo’s art.
When Heavy Metal Magazine celebrated its 20th anniversary Royo was the artist commissioned to produce a cover for the special issue.
